Doing the Math

It’s that time of year when those who have micromanaged their grades are wondering what score they will need on the final exam to pass the course. (Or whether they can pass at all!)

Here it is:

If you have below 67 heading into the final, then a passing grade may not be mathematically possible.

If you have a 67 heading into the final exam, then you need a 97 on the final exam to pass the course.

If you have a 68 heading into the final exam, then you need an 88 on the final exam to pass the course.

If you have a 69 heading into the final exam, then you need a 79 on the final exam to pass the course.

If you have a 70 heading into the final exam, then you need a 70 on the final exam to pass the course…

You’re not completely out of the woods until you have a 78+ heading into the final exam. In this case, you have put in enough effort during the course of the school year to guarantee that you will pass the course even if you earn a zero on the final exam.
