Excuses, excuses…

imagesIn high school, Mr. Beisher used to tell us, “Excuses are like armpits. Everyone has a couple, and they all stink.” Below is a list of frequent student excuses we all hear, and why they don’t work. At best, they’re annoying. At worst, they can give others the impression that you don’t care what happens to you.

1. I’ll try harder on the test.

No you won’t. You won’t be able to. I never heard about top athletes who loaf through practice, expecting game day to be any different. The way you practice is the way you’ll perform. Any coach who knows his sport will agree.

2. Betsy has no life. That’s why she’s better.

Betsy is better, because Betsy cares and works hard. Fun fact about life though? Everything is relative. Like it or not, you will be compared. I suppose the good news is that if you associate with slackers, you’ll be relatively awesome! From the movie Sixteen Candles, Farmer Ted said, “I’m kinda like their leader, ya know? Kinda like king of the dip$#!7$.”

Analogy time… I never heard of people not buying an iPhone, because that Steve Jobs guy… man, he had no life. All he ever did was create amazing new technology that was easy for everyone to use. Let’s buy and use crappy stuff, because that guy partied in school. Think about it. This excuse seriously sells yourself short. Besides, Bill Gates says that you should be nice to nerds; you’ll be working for one someday.

3. Jimmy is lucky. He is just smart.

Luck probably has nothing to do with it. This one is the ultimate cop-out. Where do students learn to think that they are not smart? Jimmy works harder than his lesser performing counterparts, but his success is most certainly not from a high IQ. The world is full of unambitious people who are nonetheless highly intelligent. Chances are, Jimmy is no smarter than you either. He works hard and applies himself.

4. My {fill in the blank} don’t value education, support my efforts, etc.

That’s probably not the case. But let’s say it is. Isn’t that all the more reason for you to bust it now, so you can coast a little later?

5. School is just so boring.

News flash! School is pretty much the same for everyone. Betsy and Jimmy feel the same was you feel. They just do something differently when they feel that way. And they do it on a consistent basis.

Bottom line? You are who you choose to be. If you have your health, be thankful.  Because you have everything you need to prosper. Never stop learning.
