Student: Can I go to the bathroom?
Me: You don’t need permission to use the restroom between periods.
Student: But I might be late…
Me: Not if you’d go to the bathroom instead of coming here first to mill about…
Too many class periods start off with this seemingly innocuous conversation. Over the years, I have realized that this conversation reveals the student’s inability to manage their daily activities. Many will walk around the room for several minutes prior to asking just before the late bell to use the restroom.
As Dave Ramsey is known to say, “Adults make a plan and follow it. Children do what feels good now.” What high school student doesn’t wish to be viewed and treated as an adult? Most complain when they are “treated like kids,” yet they continue to exhibit this very kid-like behavior.
What say you?
