10,000 Hours

PRACTICE

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell relates Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s research on how every individual who has become world class in his or her discipline has done so by acquiring about 10,000 hours of deliberate practice.

Certainly, ability plays a role. However, being 6’6″ tall didn’t guarantee Michael Jordan a lucrative NBA career. Jordan’s height was a threshold, and there are definitely players taller than he. Would being another inch or two taller have made a difference in his success? No. What made Jordan great was his work ethic, attitude, and love of the game.

The research on mastery is unequivocal. In short, mastery is a function of the number of hours of deliberate practice. I guess you could say talent is overrated. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

Remember that success is a planned event. Believe in yourself.

Pay attention, do the work, and don’t give up!
